FREDERICK J. “FREDDY” MARTIN, 97, of Sayre, PA, passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at the Sayre Healthcare Center, Sayre, PA.
Born March 6, 1920 at home on Court Street in South Waverly, PA, the son of the late Frederick (Martini) Martin and Mildred Schuyler Martin.
Growing up in the 1920s to 1930s, Freddy worked many jobs to help support his family. While attending South Waverly High School, he excelled in Basketball in the Bradford County Basketball League. In 1938 he scored 38 points, breaking the League record set by his brother Louis. His year of 218 points led the Bradford County League. He also was a Caddy at Shepard Hills, Waverly, NY where he learned the game of golf and played until 94 years of age, having several holes in one. He was a veteran of WWII serving with the US Navy Seabees in the South Pacific, ending with the largest US Navy Task Force in the history of the Invasion of Okinawa. After the war Freddy worked for the Lehigh Valley Railroad, Perfection Laundry of Sayre and Val Chem Co. of Sayre.
Freddy is predeceased by his wife Dauris Marie Holmes Martin of 68 years in 2008; his brother James in the Korean War, 1951 and his brother Louis in 1984.
He is survived by his daughter Ann Marie and Bob Horton of Athens and son Louis and Patricia Martin of South Waverly, 3 granddaughters, 2 great granddaughters and a grandson, and 3 great great grandchildren.
Friends and family may call on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 from 4pm-6pm at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. Funeral services will follow at the funeral home at 6pm.
Burial will take place on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at 10am in the Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, PA.
